The mini rainy season is here (I think). For the past 2 days weve had rain off and on, and its been cloudy and cool. This should last about a month, then were back to normal until about June, when the sky falls for 3 months, until right before were scheduled to leave.
Amy was sick last week, almost all week. First she started with flu-like symptoms, then developed some minor/major G.I. (Gastro Intestinal) issues (minor or major depending on the day or hour). Yesterday I developed similar G.I. issues, without any flu-like symptoms however. Hmmm… Interesting. We couldnt figure it out because we eat the same things, and never get sick at the same time. If it was something we were eating, then we should get sick at the same time, right?
This morning I figured it out: ICE CUBES. Ive been making ice cubes in our freezer, and for whatever reason Ive been using tap water, not our boiled drinking water. It works out: as Amy was flu-ish, I got her some orange juice and served it to her with… ice cubes. I dont know why I didnt think of it sooner. Gin and tonic one night, G.I issues the next morning. So hopefully with the new improved idiot-less ice cubes we will stop having these fragrant and sonorous G.I flare ups.
This week we get busy. We have more work hours this week, and will go look at an orphanage on Thursday to see about volunteering. We are starting Amharic classes Tuesday, so hopefully soon we will be able to say more than 5 seperate, non-related words when we talk to people.
Right now my conversations are something like this:
(in amharic): “Hello! How are you? I’m fine. [shrug] [shrug] No amharic!”
(Then in English): “Maybe 10 words Amharic…”
(back in amharic): “chicken, dog, yes, go, come, egg, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, stop, house… [shrug] [shrug][smile smile]”
I can only improve from here.
Last night we made bean soup with ox meat in it- pretty chewy meat but not bad other than that.
